Before I arrived at ECO Lifestyle + Lodge, I was already sold on the online description. This 10-room boutique hotel is “tucked away in the hills, overlooking the dramatic seascape of the East Coast.” What I didn’t know was how much I was going to fall in love with this gem. The hotel is Green Globe Certified and lives up to its reputation through its uncompromising care for the environment. The water is heated by solar energy, there are recycling and compost facilities, and the glasses in the restaurant are made from recycled glass water bottles used by hotel guests.
In addition to being eco-conscious, the hotel is also committed to supporting the local community.
The beautifully crafted plates and cups in the rooms were made by Hamilton Pottery, a local small business. The coffee, also available in rooms, was roasted locally by Wyndhams, a family-run business. Ingredients for the delectable food at the restaurant, which is primarily plant-based and organic, are sourced from neighboring farms, caught in nearby waters, and foraged on-island.
Eco Lifestyle + Lodge does all of the above while simultaneously encouraging relaxation and adventure. There are hammocks spread across the lodge, there is a handmade outdoor sauna, and mountain bikes are available to guests. The hotel offers massage services, hiking guides, and spearfishing activities, all in partnership with the local community.
I left ECO knowing that I had experienced the best Barbados has to offer in terms of a hotel that is eco-conscious, community-minded and cares about the physical and emotional wellbeing of its guests.
